Reading Charity Chic's guest1 blog the other day I was taken with the photograph of August Darnell wearing a rather snazzy yellow jacket. It put me in mind of the guy whose photo I took a couple of weeks ago at #Pride in Nottingham. The coolest dude I'd seen all day, by a country mile.
Not many men can get away with wearing yellow; a while ago now I took a series of selfies of me in a yellow shirt standing in front of various yellow doors. I really must pick that one up again - it was great fun. But I digress. So who can get away with yellow? Well, for me, it all comes down to one2 man. And that man is Mick Jagger.
The above photo was taken in 1974 with his then ball & chain, Mrs. Bianca Jagger. They were married in 1971 but hit the rocks in '78; rumour has it they got joint custody of the wardrobe.
Here he is wearing more garments that are neither custard nor mustard. Suit you, sir!
2. Not Freddie bloody Mercury in his Live Aid bolero jacket.
I would not dispute that Mick wears it well but I don't think he is the only one. If you look at the soul and funk scene there were some fine-looking yellow fellows, as Mr Bootsy Collins demonstrates here:

Some mellower yellow but with added marvellous music:

Bootsy for sure. Yep, I've used that photo a couple of times to demonstrate some yellow theme or other. The Temptations on the other hand...it's barely magnolia. Great period clip tho' I have to agree.

I had a pair of yellow trousers once and wore them once with a borrowed yellow denim jacket.
ReplyDeleteIt was approximately 5 seconds before I was called a banana and the experiment was swiftly abandoned.
Thankfully there are no pictures!
Thanks for your brutally frank confession, CC. I'm guessing you lived in a house with no mirrors.
DeleteDid you ever wonder why a Captain or a Lieutenant or even a Colonel Yellow were not characters in Captain Scarlet?
ReplyDeleteThank you, George. In answer to your question (and with the sound of a vehicle reversing) I think you'll find Captain Ochre is yellowish; well, the same shade of yellow as the Tempts above.
DeleteGreat pictures and I would disagree - both custard and mustard amongst them!
ReplyDeleteIt's the snake hips that works for the yellow oxford bag trousers. Wouldn't work on a more rotund fella.
Even back when I did have a 28" waist, yellow was never a colour that interested me trouser wise. Red, however...
