'73

Today's musical offering is a no nonsense glam rock workout from Def Leppard that needs precious little by way of introduction. Suffice it to say it's very route one in as much as it wears its influences shamelessly on (and indeed in) its sleeve: this record is essentially a three & a bit minute homage to the sound that defined the period 1971-1974; if you don't like Slade, or Gary Glitter, or Mott the Hoople, or Sweet, or even Marc Bolan then, one, we can't be friends and, two, you'll hate this. As you'd expect it comes in an artistically battered picture sleeve on regular black vinyl and a rather sexy blue counterpart. Also, for lovers of Dymo Tape, the official video is a must watch.

Def Leppard - Just Like '73 (2024)

  1. I went to the 2013 Mott reunion gig at the O2 Arena (ex Millennium Dome) and Joe Elliot wandered on and sang along on a couple of numbers. Well they said it was him, from where we were sitting it was impossible to tell.

    1. If it walks like a Leppard, talks like a Leppard...

  2. In the late 1970s and early 1980s I palled around with a bunch of musicians who went through a number of name and line-up changes over the years, though in all those incarnations only ever managed to release one single. 'I'll Be Your Spark' was generally unrepresentative of what they did, but it sure did capture what Mark E Smith called the glam racket, much like Joe & the gang in fact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4drefGri9Sg

    1. I rather like 'I'll Be Your Spark' although the Good Ship Glam had long since sailed by 1982 which probably did not help them commercially. And I'm intrigued by the apparent connection to Bill Martin of 'Puppet on a String', 'Congratulations', Bay City Rollers and Kenny fame.

    2. Zoomiiz also featured the son of Herbie Flowers on drums.

    3. Would Mr Flowers be the Herbie who co-produced it with Pat and Dan?

    4. Will give it a coat of looking at.

  3. I think that may be the first thing by Def Leppard that I have ever liked!
