It's York, December 2022. Our Jorvik pub crawl has not long begun. ''Look out for the purple door with the fox knocker,'' I said to our friends as we were seeking out a hostelry I remembered going in a couple of years ago; though I couldn't recollect the name of it I knew it was down a narrow alleyway and just before it, on the right hand side, was a heavily glossed bright purple door with a fabulous fox knocker on it. (I later went on to use the image on a friend's playlist.)
And so my latest photography craze began. I say began; it was only a few days later whilst I was on my regular lunchtime walk when I espied another fox (I now have a brace) that I realised I would now subconsciously be looking out for these brass bad boys wherever I happen to find myself. In true Shaw Taylor style I'll be keeping 'em peeled.
Feel free to contribute any foxy sightings you may stumble upon in your part of the world. I'd like to think they live hidden in plain sight and have been watching us all for sometime now...
Oh, I love knockers! All shapes and sizes (fnaar fnaar and all that) but I mean all these unusual ones - foxes and hands and woodpeckers and snails etc. - fab stuff. There's just something about them. I'm the same with knobs. (And repeat...)
ReplyDeleteWe had an architectural ironmongery shop in town called Knobs & Knockers. It later became House of Brass but I've a feeling it's gone altogether - probably a vape shop now.
DeleteFront doors are fascinating things. Another (short-lived) photographic project I embarked upon a while back was taking selfies in a rather garish yellow shirt standing in front of yellow front doors; I must pick that one up again - it was fun.
Yes, "what a lovely set of knobs and knockers", as Blue Peter presenter Simon Groom managed to segue into an item back in the day. How we laughed!
ReplyDeleteYou now have piqued my interest and I'll be looking out for interesting door knockers now. Sadly where I live in suburbia no-one has a knocker at all but I'm sure when I'm in town there will be a few.
Did you drink like a Viking or were you quite sedate?
Do I drink like a Viking? I can honestly say that's a question I've never been asked before! I don't know is the honest answer; I've never been drinking with one before to gauge my consumption:)
DeleteCan't say I would know either but I'm sure whilst in York back in the day they put away a fair bit of ale. (Going by the stereotype Viking depicted in movies, perhaps they were quite different.)
