On slow news days, not least slow news days* in January, I have been known to drop pictures of English starlets in their prime for no reason, and with precious little subtext, whatsoever. Today is one of those days: there was a time when Elizabeth Taylor was the most famous face in the world. Pictured above and below are eight stunning examples.
*The day I start writing blogs abut Royal paedophiles is the day I stop writing. Period.
In 1962 Bob Dylan wrote the humorous lines '...I make love to Elizabeth Taylor...catch hell from Richard Burton...' Flash forward 25 years and if you Google 'Bob Dylan Elizabeth Taylor 55th birthday party' you'll find photographic evidence of the two of them becoming, ahem, somewhat intimately acquainted. I've never seen Bob looking so happy.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean! You'd frame that and stick it on the mantelpiece, wouldn't you?
DeleteShe was one stunning lady.
ReplyDeleteClicked on the link and saw the pic of Joan. I stumbled upon her documentary on the BBC iPlayer the other night and was fascinated. She had a similar look to Elizabeth in the starlet days but of course is still going today at 88, and still looks fantastic. Like with Elizabeth, quite a life story.
Yep, stunning. You'd have to feel sorry for any other women in a room when Taylor walked in.
DeleteMixed my left and right up. Bottom right yellow I meant!
DeleteIncredible pictures, bottom left yellow especially. I always like her as Cleopatra too.
ReplyDeleteCheers, Adam. I won't tell you which is my favourite!
DeleteMy O Level class studied Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, we had the paperback version with a still of Taylor & Burton from the movie and watched the latter as part of the study. 'Older' Liz was a powerful and utterly compelling presence. Great pictures and comments.
ReplyDeleteThank you, K. And there we have it, Taylor in four words:
Delete* Stunning
* Powerful
* Utterly compelling
