One Nation Under a Roof

Polyester Polymath

Jarvis Cocker is something of a polymath (like a northern Stephen Fry, only with better songs), and although nobody wants to be trapped in a lift (not least in a pandemic), I'm guessing if you were stuck in an elevator with this gangly Yorkshireman till the engineer came, the conversation would probably be quite memorable. If you have been stuck in a lift with the former Pulp frontman please drop me a line.

I know what Jarvis was listening to during lockdown, but just out of interest can you account for what was being played on your sanitised turntable whilst you were eking out the last of your bread & bog roll supplies?

  1. Almost, I was waiting for the lift on the top floor of Cole Brothers (John Lewis in Sheffield) and when it arrived Jarvis strode out.

    1. Nice one, Artog! You should've pushed him back in again. "SECURITY!'

    2. And a big thank you again to Artog for this close(ish) encounter. All your lift sightings gratefully received btw; they don't have to be polymaths, or, indeed, in Sheffield. Going Up!

  2. Also, was sat outside a pub I used to go to in Sheffield and JC walked past trundling a suitcase behind him. His sister lived across the road apparently. He said, "Evening lads" to me and my friend. My friend was totally unfazed, saw him all the time he said, quite an unremarkable occurrence.

  3. As lockdown anxiety levels rose, I found that the meandering nature of the music I was listening to increased accordingly. Snappy two minute pop ditties were kicked into touch, ushering in a period of perpetual Monday Long Songs soundtracking life at Swede Towers.

    1. I know Spotify isn't your bag, TS; but anyone who has the free version and only plays songs of min. 20 mins length are gonna be quids in - as the ads only kick in every third track or so!

  4. Brilliant, love Artog's tales too. I would happily be stuck in a lift with Jarvis Cocker. You've got me thinking now too (maybe there's a series in this? or does it just sound like English homework?) - "who would you most like and least like to be stuck in a lift with, and why? Discuss"

    1. I agree - Artog is like Magnus Mills: he celebrates the mundane.
Lifts = Good. I would gladly welcome any lift stories.

  5. I would probably be struck dumb if I found myself in a lift with someone I admired or else babble on incoherently, so the opportunity would be wasted. Incidentally I was nearly in a lift situation with Stephen Fry as he used to come up here with Hugh Laurie back in the day to write (getting away from it all).

As for music, I think I've probably watched more telly since lockdown began so new musical finds (or old ones rediscovered) have often come from soundtracks.

    1. Another near miss! I doubt very much you'd be struck dumb if Stephen Fry was sharing your elevator!
