This afternoon I found myself listening to The Sounds of Jimmy Smith, his long player from 1957. I'm guessing a young Keith Emerson probably played this album a lot when Emerson Lake & Palmer were writing Brain Salad Surgery. The Fight predates prog by a good ten years and is almost certainly the template for ELP's Karn Evil 9; God knows what the jazzers made of this when it landed on their turntables.
Blimey! I never knew that 'Karn Evil 9' had an original template but this is, undoubtedly, it. Not heard that said anywhere else. Great work, sir. I've listened to a fair bit of Jimmy Smith but I've never heard this before. Must get that album. Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt's on here: 8 albums on a 4 CD Box Set; and enough change out of a tenner to buy a pint. Well, a half at least!
ReplyDeleteCheers, John! Just made the purchase (don't tell the missus!). What a bargain.
ReplyDeleteAs I believe a great man once said - blimey! The ELP opus is very familiar to me, but this absolutely is not, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. I'm off to take a look at that box set.
ReplyDeleteBlimey indeed. As I was listening to it I thought: 'hang on a minute, I know this.' It'd be interesting to see if Emerson ever name-checked Smith? Glad you like it!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back my friends to the show that never ends.
