Radio 4 debut

A few weeks ago I told you the BBC were going to run with an idea of mine for a radio programme. Radio 4's iPM, the sister show to PM, picked up an a theme I wrote for this blog back in May - whatever happened to transport caffs? With help from artist Anton Hecht and sound engineer Chris Prosho, we opened it up and interviewed punters at The Limes in Nottinghamshire and got to discover all sorts of things. We got an insight not just into who still uses roadside caffs, but also their back stories. And we wrote a song! It's going out this evening at 5.30pm, but if you want a sneak preview of the 5 minute soundscape we created, it's here.

(l-r) Chris Prosho, Anton Hecht, Mark (Limes owner), John Medd

A big thank you to Ryan Dilley at the BBC. And Hugh Sykes.

  1. Hey, hey great news John. Any plans for a follow up? Perhap independent caffs still in existence, those little outfits in big cities holding out against being Starbucked?

  2. Fantastic! Well done. I love iPM, and would marry Eddie Mair if I wasn't already married and he wasn't gay. I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

  5. great stuff JM! just had a listen on iPlayer (kicks in around 12 mins 30). Loved it! I too would loved to have heard more. You got a good 10 minutes tho, which is very respectable.

    Nice one!

  7. Thank you for all your kind comments. It was fun to do. It made me think about something Mondo said when we met for a few beers earlier in the year: 'Why don't you do a podcast?' Once we've got moved and installed in the new place, who knows?

  10. How cool!

There is an old cafe along the A2 from me - I pass it at least once a week but I never go in... it's called "The Tuck Inn" BRILLIANT! I know that is was there when my Dad were a lad - he used to be a big competition cyclist during and just after the war and I know his club used to start/finish some races from there in the 40s.

There is a site with some good reviews at the link below... might as well give it a plug :-)
